This month ASK4 was proud to sponsor Major League Hacking's regional hackathon in our home city - HackSheffield.

Hosted at The University of Sheffield, HackSheffield was open to students from across the UK and brought together hundreds of talented, tech savvy individuals to challenge and inspire computer science innovation.

Best Use of Home Automation

As a sponsor, ASK4 was able to set the hackers a prize challenge, and like all challenges the brief was short. We asked for...

The best use of home automation or Internet of Things devices in student accommodation.

We had some impressive entries but the winners really stood out - the creators of the Slightly Smarter Door. The S.S. Door is a clever IoT solution to a common student issue - getting locked out of your student accommodation bedroom! You can read the idea and methodology from the team of four in full here.

What really impressed the ASK4 team was the students' ability to take a real world problem and demonstrate a feasible and innovative solution. Not only that, they took the challenge one step further by imagining several possible product evolutions to add additional functionality. Worthy winners of the £500 Amazon voucher prize.

HackSheffield is a testament to the tech talent we have in this city, many of whom we hope will stay on after graduation to build their careers within the fantastic tech companies based here...including ASK4.
