Tradition meets contemporary in the Italian student accommodation sector
Class of 2020 News Release: 11 June 2018
Over the last years, Italy has gradually become one of the most exciting opportunities for the student living industry.
This upswing is mainly fuelled by the internationally renowned and acclaimed Italian universities. Cities like Milan, Bologna, Rome, Turin and Florence are attracting vast amounts of talented urbanites. Despite a still limited offer of English-taught programs, these university cities are welcoming an increasing number of international students. This wave of young talent is now rapidly shaping new purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) developments.
In the last decade, PBSA has become an asset class of its own. The undersupplied Italian student housing market offers a large spectrum of growth possibilities for investors that are looking to expand their portfolio. With its strong design tradition, Italy has an eye for materialisation and details: two fundamentals that make lively and inviting buildings for young talent.
As Tiziana Marchi, Vice Director of Polimoda states:
"Space is a “structure” that contains human activities and that can degrade, but also increase the energy that is developed within”.
This produces plenty of questions to explore:
How can form and aesthetics contribute to a sense of community, to a sense of belonging, and to student living experience as a whole?
What attracts international students to Italian higher education and to cities in general, and why do they stay?
What are the latest Italian PBSA developments and which are the most promising sites and locations?
The Class of 2020 Italian Session will take place in Florence in the brand new The Student Hotel on 21st June and will explore the relation between tradition and contemporary within the Italian student living market. Speakers include Deputy Mayor Giovanni Bettarini (City of Florence), Tiziana Marchi (Polimoda), Michelangelo Giombini (Maniffatura Tabacchi), Claudio Francese (Uniplaces), Federico Galardi (rtmliving) and Walter Gamma (Camplus).
